Our Manual Driving Instructor in Grays
Daniel W. | Teaching since 2003
Fluent in: English
Dan joined the team at Alfie’s Driving School in January 2025, and it has been an absolute pleasure having him on board. Since his arrival, he has established an exemplary track record, achieving nothing short of five-star reviews and maintaining a record of virtually all first-time passes.
Dan is a thoroughly laid back, happy-go lucky family man who brings a sense of calm and positivity to every lesson. He understands that learning to drive can sometimes feel daunting. Because of this, he focuses on creating a relaxed, patient, and supportive environment in the car. He loves utilising excellent local training routes like the quiet loops of Stifford Clays, the residential grid off Blackshots Lane, and the low-stress emerging points around Victoria Avenue to transform nervous beginners into confident, safe drivers.

Passed 1st time with 2 minor faults
I honestly couldn’t recommend my driving instructor enough! He was absolutely amazing from start to finish and made such a huge difference to my confidence behind the wheel. He was always so patient, encouraging and supportive, and made me feel comfortable even when I was nervous or unsure.
He was also so easy to talk to and made every lesson enjoyable, which made learning to drive feel so much less stressful. He explained things clearly, gave me confidence in my abilities and always knew exactly what I needed to work on.
He’s genuinely brilliant at his job and I’m so grateful for all the time and effort he put into helping me pass my test (On my first go). I couldn’t have asked for a better instructor. Thank you so much for everything Dan! 🚗❤️

Passed 1st time with 1 minor fault
Had an amazing experience with my instructor Dan. Was always realistic with me and pushed me to be better and led me to pass my test with 20 hours of lessons. Couldn’t ask for more and would recommend to everyone!

Passed 1st time with 3 minor faults
My son, Alfie, had an amazing experience with his instructor, Dan. He was always incredibly accommodating with lesson times, and when we booked Alfie’s test, Dan rearranged his schedule to ensure he had the right number of lessons beforehand.
My son is quite shy, but Dan always made him feel comfortable and helped build his confidence behind the wheel.
We are so happy with the experience, we honestly couldn’t have asked for a better instructor. Thank you, Dan, for all your support and we will definitely be booking lessons with you, for our daughter in a few months’ time!

Mastering Grays’ Test Routes & Complex Junctions
Passing your driving test on the first attempt relies heavily on total familiarity with the most challenging local roads. We guide you directly through Grays’ trickiest roundabouts, busiest junctions, and dual carriageways—the exact areas test examiners monitor—so you approach your test feeling fully prepared and confident.
Cromwell Road & Clarence Road T-Junctions
Navigating the Treacle Mine Roundabout
The Treacle Mine Roundabout is a highly complex, multi-lane junction linking the A1012 (Hogg Lane) at exit 1, the A1306 at exit 2, Elizabeth Road at exit 3, and Long Lane at exit 4. When approaching from the busy A1012 Stifford Interchange, forward planning, early signpost recognition, vigilance regarding sudden lane changes, and thorough mirror checks when exiting are absolutely pivotal.
Crucially, you must read the road markings early to select the correct lane on this four-lane roundabout. If you realise you are in the wrong lane, the safest procedure is to continue along that lane, drive completely around the roundabout, and exit only when it is safe to do so. Never attempt a sudden lane change, and always stay strictly within your marked lines to avoid cutting off adjacent traffic.
Bruce Wharf Give-Way System: Stuart Road to Argent Street Junction
While the give-way system at Bruce Wharf was introduced as a traffic-calming measure, it is not always the safest solution for our roads.
The stretch of road connecting Stuart Road and Argent Street has unfortunately become a hazardous bottleneck. Instead of slowing down when turning into the area, some motorists attempt to speed through to beat oncoming traffic. These artificial give-way lines often cause unintended hazards, resulting in frequent near head-on collisions.
This flawed layout regularly leads to serious traffic infringements. Drivers are routinely seen making dangerous, unlawful overtaking manoeuvres just to squeeze past, completely ignoring the 20mph limit and failing to yield the right-of-way as directed by the road signs.

Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers to common queries about beginning your driving journey in Essex.
Where are the best quiet spots nearby to practice manoeuvres?
The quiet residential streets of Leasway, Elmway, Whitmore Avenue, Fairway, Laird Avenue, and Jesmond Road are ideal for perfecting parallel parking, emergency stops, and pulling up on the right. Additionally, the Blackshots swimming pool car park is perfect for mastering bay parking. Because these areas feature slight inclines and tie into popular Tilbury test routes, they provide the excellent real-world practice needed to master your manual car’s biting point and clutch control without the pressure of heavy traffic.
How many manual driving lessons in Grays will I need to pass my test?
Every learner is completely unique, so the exact number of hours varies depending on your individual pace and past road experience.
On average, the DVSA states that most learners need around 45 hours of professional tuition combined with private practice, but our structured training framework is designed to get you safely test-ready as efficiently as possible.
Where is the best place to start learning to drive as a beginner?
The Blackshots Estate (the residential grid branching off Blackshots Lane) and the Stifford Clays residential loops (around Crammavill Street) are highly recommended. These areas feature wide, predictable roads with simple T-junctions, making them ideal for practising basic steering, gear changes, and clutch control without the pressure of fast-moving traffic.
Can you help me pass if I am an incredibly nervous driver?
That is our specialty. Our instructors are local experts who know exactly how to handle nervous learners.
We take things at your pace, starting on quiet residential roads before gradually building your confidence up to handle major junctions and faster routes when you feel completely ready.
How do I build confidence during my driving lessons?
Victoria Avenue is a fantastic, low-stress spot to practice emerging onto Lodge Lane. Because Victoria Avenue is wide and quiet, you have plenty of time to get your car positioned and your speed controlled before you reach the junction.
The best part about this specific turn is the excellent visibility. The corners are wide and open, meaning there are no blind bends or blocked views. From a complete stop, you can easily look both ways, spot a comfortable gap in the traffic, and pull out onto Lodge Lane completely at your own pace.
Will I keep the same instructor and car for my entire driving course?
Yes, you will have consistency throughout your training.
You will learn with the same dedicated instructor and in the exact same manual car for all your lessons, and that is the identical vehicle you will use to take your practical driving test.
