Requirements to Become a Qualified ADI Instructor
Before starting your journey, you must meet the legal criteria set by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA):
Age Limit
You must be at least 21 years old by the time you fully qualify.
Driving Licence
You must hold a full UK or EEA driving licence for at least 3 years.
Clean Record
You should have a clean licence with a maximum of 6 penalty points.
Background Check
You must pass an enhanced AccessNI or DBS record check.
Disqualifications
You must not have had any driving bans within the last 4 years.
PDI Training Process
To qualify as an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI), the DVSA requires you to complete three qualifying examinations.
Part 1. Theory Exam
A comprehensive 1.5-hour computer-based test focusing on your core knowledge of the Highway Code, road safety guidelines, and active hazard perception skills.
Test Fee: £81 per attempt
Part 2. Advanced Driving
A rigorous 1 hour practical driving test where a senior examiner carefully evaluates your expert-level mechanical control, road awareness, and safety.
Test Fee: £111 per attempt
Part 3. Teaching Ability
A real-world 1 hour test assessing your live coaching competence, lesson structuring, and safety management while delivering a lesson to a pupil.
Test Fee: £111 per attempt
Please Note: Official DVSA examination fees (Part 1-3) and the Trainee Licence badge are paid directly to the government and are separate from our training tuition fees.
Earn a full income while you finish your instructor training with a Trainee Licence.
The Trainee Licence, often called the Pink Badge, is an optional but highly recommended step after you pass your Part 2 exam. It allows you to legally charge pupils for driving lessons before passing your final Part 3 test.
Pass Faster: Get vital, real-world teaching experience to ace your Part 3 exam.
How It Works: You must be sponsored by a driving school (like us!) and complete 40 hours of training before applying.
Validity and Fees: The badge costs £140 and lasts for exactly 6 months.

The Alfie’s Driving School Difference
What sets us apart isn’t just the work we provide, but how we support and value our instructors every single day.
Confirmed Bookings
Many driving school networks charge premium monthly fees only to send you phone numbers of people who ‘might’ want lessons. At Alfie’s, we send you fully committed pupils with confirmed bookings, not raw leads. We stay on top of bookings carefully and always ensure that your diary is kept full.
Dedicated Admin Support
You teach, and we handle the rest. Our dedicated office team takes care of all the initial learner enquiries, schedule management, and upfront payments so you never have to waste time chasing loose ends. This leaves you completely free to focus entirely on providing excellent training on the road.
A True Family Community
From day one, you will be a valued team member, working together as a cohesive unit to deliver 5-star service to our learners. We get together regularly for social meetups, and because we treat our team right, most of our instructors choose to stick around with us for many years.
Professional Development
We are deeply invested in your long-term success. Unlike schools that leave you to figure things out alone after qualifying, we offer ongoing mentoring, check-test preparation, and up-to-date industry guidance. We ensure you always remain a top-tier, highly confident instructor while maximising your ultimate earning potential.
