Zub's Introduction
Hi, I’m Zub, a manual driving instructor at Alfie’s Driving School.
With an MSc in Economics and six years of commercial experience in the transport industry—including accident investigations and risk analysis—I bring a calm, professional, and detail-oriented approach to my lessons.
I am passionate about economics, driving, and classic cars (the BMW E21 is my absolute dream car). I also speak Polish, allowing me to support a wider range of pupils and help them feel completely comfortable and confident behind the wheel.
My Standout Moment
My absolute standout moment was training a pupil who was completely convinced they would never get the hang of a manual car. They had been told by others to just give up and switch to an automatic because they kept stalling at busy junctions. We went right back to basics, perfected their clutch control, and worked on their timing. When they passed their practical test on the very first attempt with a completely clean sheet—zero faults—it was an unbelievable feeling.
Why do I love what I do?
I love instructing because there is nothing quite like watching a pupil suddenly click with a manual gearbox. Teaching manual driving is all about helping someone master a genuine mechanical skill, and seeing that lightbulb moment when gear changes become second nature is incredibly satisfying. I love giving people a skill that gives them total freedom to drive absolutely any car they want, anywhere in the world.
Advice For New Learners
Do not fear the clutch pedal. Stalling is not a failure; it is just your car telling you that your feet are moving a bit too quickly. In the beginning, give yourself permission to make mistakes and take your time finding the biting point. Once you master that foot coordination and learn to read the road layout early, managing a manual car becomes completely effortless and muscle memory takes over.
Test Day Tip
When you drive out of the Romford area on your test day, keep your focus entirely on your own car and don’t let tailgaters or busy town traffic rush your gear changes. If you find yourself in the wrong gear or even if you stall, stay calm, secure the car, re-set, and start again. The examiner wants to see how you deal with situations safely and responsibly, not that you are a perfect machine.

Romford Driving Test Route Guide: Crucial Junctions & Tips
Your ultimate guide to passing in Romford. Get insider tips on navigating the local area’s most notorious roundabouts and hidden speed transitions.
Mastering Romford Hardest Routes
Lessons frequently focus on the area’s notorious hotspots, including the busy lane disciplines at the Gallows Corner gyratory, handling the tight clearance and oncoming traffic through the narrow residential zones of Elm Park, and mastering the deceptive speed transitions onto the high-speed A127 Southend Arterial Road.
By training extensively around local landmarks like the Romford Ring Road and Raphael Park, pupils enter their practical test with zero surprises.

Test Centre & Route Insights
Tip From Zub
“Testing at Hornchurch means you will frequently navigate the dense town traffic and sudden lane changes around Romford.
Plan your downshifts early for the tight roundabouts and yellow box junctions so you never feel rushed by other drivers. Keep your eyes moving, stay disciplined with your clutch, and take your time.”
Route Preparation
Your lessons will cover the exact perimeter roads and exit routes used during real exams.
Practicing right up to the test centre gates ensures your test environment feels completely familiar and stress-free.
What to Expect
The Start
Located on Station Lane, the Hornchurch centre features limited on-site candidate parking. You will likely begin with a reverse bay park directly at the centre, or move straight out via the tricky yellow-box junction into the steady flow of local residential traffic.
The Route
A challenging suburban mix of high-volume shopping parades, narrow car-lined streets with oncoming traffic, complex mini-roundabouts, and fast dual-carriageway segments like the A127 or the demanding Roneo Corner gyratory.
The Manoeuvres
Expect a strong chance of executing a parallel park or pulling up on the right. These are commonly requested along the tightly packed residential streets off Abbs Cross Lane, or roads near Harrow Lodge Lane.
Common Faults
Mini-Roundabout Discipline: Late lane selection, drifting over the central markings, or unnecessary hesitation at busy intersections like Upminster Bridge or Corbets Tey.
Station Lane Box Junctions: Misjudging oncoming traffic or halting on the yellow grid markings near the local station when the exit isn’t clear.
Speed Limit Transitions: Allowing your speed to drift over the strictly enforced permanent 20mph limits near local schools and high street cafes, or failing to react to sudden 30mph and 50mph changes.
Test Centre Stats
Busiest Times to Avoid: Monday to Friday from 08:00 AM – 09:30 AM and 03:00 PM – 04:30 PM. This is when the heavy school run and commuter congestion peak around local stations and shopping parades.
Parking Info: Limited candidate bays available on-site; strictly no public practice or general parking allowed during official testing hours.
Key Route Hotspots You’ll Master
Conquer Romford’s most challenging junctions and roundabouts, building your confidence on the exact roads used by local examiners to grade your test.
Gallows Corner
Conquer one of the most infamous junctions in the local area. You will master reading the lanes early, handling the heavy multi-lane traffic flows, and safely navigating the flyover approaches.
Romford Town Centre
Master the fast-paced ring road and narrow town streets. Focus on sharp observations around heavy bus traffic, constant pedestrian crossings, and making early lane selections.
A127 Southend Arterial Road
Build confidence on high-speed dual carriageways. You will learn how to use the slip roads to match the speed of fast-moving traffic smoothly and merge safely without hesitation.
Hornchurch Test Centre
Get to grips with the roads surrounding the Station Lane test centre. Practice the tight residential side streets, sudden hill starts, and turning manoeuvres that examiners love to use.

Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers to common queries about beginning your driving lessons in Romford.
Where do people in Romford usually take their practical driving test?
Because Romford does not have its own dedicated test centre, most local learners will take their practical test at the nearby Hornchurch Test Centre (on Station Lane) or the Goodmayes Test Centre. Your instructor will help you decide which one suits your driving style best and will train you extensively on those specific test routes.
Will my lessons take place on the actual test routes?
Yes, absolutely. Your initial lessons will focus on mastering basic car control on quieter residential roads right here in Romford. Once your confidence grows, your instructor will guide you out towards Hornchurch or Goodmayes. You will spend plenty of time getting familiar with the exact junctions, dual carriageways, and roundabouts that the examiners use daily.
How many driving lessons will I need before I can book my test?
The DVSA suggests an average of around 45 hours of professional tuition, but everyone learns at their own pace. Your instructor will track your progress closely on a personal record block. They will never push you into a test before you are ready, but they won’t hold you back either once you are driving safely and independently.
Do you offer flexible pickup locations around the Romford area?
Yes, all of our local instructors offer a convenient door-to-door service. You can arrange to be picked up from your home in Romford, your workplace, or even a local train station like Gidea Park, Harold Wood, or Romford town centre. Just let your instructor know your schedule in advance so they can plan the route accordingly.
Is it true that learning to drive in an automatic car is faster?
Yes, most pupils find they require fewer hours to reach test standard in an automatic. Because there is no clutch pedal to master and you do not have to worry about changing gears, you can focus entirely on your steering, road positioning, and speed control. This allows you to progress much more quickly to the busier junctions around Romford.
Will we practice automatic hill starts on our local routes?
We certainly will. Even though an automatic car will not stall, handling hill starts smoothly is still an important skill—especially on the steeper inclines you will encounter around the Hornchurch and Goodmayes test routes. I will teach you how to use the handbrake effectively and manage your accelerator pedal so the car never rolls back when pulling away.
